Pumice forms when escaping gases in airborne molten lava create solid foam, thus forming one handy elemental tool. Stones wash down Mt. Shasta – last eruption believed late 1700’s- with snowmelt. Thicker abrasive cell walls make these less buoyant than lighter kinds, but are far more durable - a cared for rock can last years.
